Naturally, everyone wants to know how much their custom software application is going to cost to build. We'll give you some general info here, but the best way to get an accurate estimate is to contact us.
In the 20 years that I have been developing custom software, I have never run across anyone who didn't want to know how much their custom software was going to cost. I seriously doubt you are going to be the first. So to help you understand what your project might cost, let's go over the factors that drive the cost of custom software development.
Generally speaking, most of the cost of a custom software application can be attributed to labor. To determine the labor cost simply calculate the hours required per developer times each person's hourly rate. If life were only that simple. Let's talk about developer productivity for a minute.
As mentioned above, labor is a huge portion of the cost of a custom software project. But no two developers (or teams) are ever the same. A senior, highly experienced developer works faster, smarter, and makes less mistakes (or bugs). It is not uncommon for a skilled developer to be able to work 10 to 50 times faster than a lesser experienced developer. So the productivity of the developer plays a huge role in not only the cost, but also the quality of the finished product. This is why our entire team is comprised of senior level developers.
The other part of the equation in determining labor costs is the hourly rate. In our industry rates are all over the map, literally. On the low end, offshore companies from India charge anywhere from $15 to $35 per hour. Those companies typically rely on freshers, or recent college graduates. You can probably imagine how that works out. On the other end of the spectrum you have highly regarded American companies, most charging $100 to $150 per hour. They employ almost all American developers, mostly do really good work, and charge for it.
Then you have hybrid companies like MyProgrammer, who mix onshore American talent with highly skilled offshore developers (ours are mostly from Europe). The idea is to keep the rates down while maintaining high productivity. By the way, we charge $50 per hour, and our team averages 8 years experience.
First, the only way to know for sure is to have us review your project requirements, and then estimate the effort. The good news? That effort, along with the initial consultation, is 100% free. But you didn't read this far to just get a "call me" answer, so let's give you some really rough numbers.
Based on projects we've worked on over the past few years, the typical project usually costs anywhere from $25,000 to $50,000, and takes 3 to 6 months to complete, but your project may be very different. Of course, we also work on the occasional 2 week project, not to mention those multi-year engagements, but both of those situations are not very common. I personally like a 3 to 6 month project, as it gives everyone (including yourself) a sense of accomplishment.
