Drupal is a free and open source Content Management System (CMS) written in PHP. It's my favorite CMS for a lot of reasons, which I will cover in this section.
What's Drupal?
Drupal is a free program you install on your web server. It can be installed on most shared hosts, and uses a variety of databases, including MySQL. Using Drupal you can manage all your web content. To make the point even clearer, this site was built entirely with Drupal 5. Drupal allows you to manage every aspect of your site without programming. Look, I use Drupal so that should tell you something. It just makes maintaining a website easier. For example, I needed to move a few pages to another section of the site. In the old days (a few years back) I would have to redo the links, physically move the files, and make sure nothing got broken in the process. Drupal makes that chore 30 seconds long, and it handles all the link chores for you. Just remember, this entire site was written with Drupal.
Drupal has other great features too. First off, the code base is professional. It is well structured, secure, fast and highly extensible. For instance, let's say you want to add a forum to your website. Drop in a free forum module and you are up and running in minutes. Need social networking features? There's a module for that too. There are thousands of modules that expand the capabilities of your site easily, and quickly.
Drupal is great for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) too. You found this site, didn't you? Drupal is also fast. The pages on this site or served dynamically, meaning database calls are made to retrieve the content you see. Drupal is used by thousands of organizations all over the world. The New York Observer, Popular Science, and The Onion use Drupal. Even the White House uses Drupal. Think about how many visitors they get each day!
